Sports and Remedial Massage

Sports and Remedial MassageWhat is Sports Massage Therapy?

Sports massage therapy is a valuable aid to healing and relaxation, for athletes and less active people alike. Therapists use a mix of different techniques of manual manipulation of the skin, muscle and soft-tissue. As it’s a deeper form of massage, recipients find it a better remedy for aches and pains, with longer lasting results.

Sports massage is used in the treatment of back pain, headaches, muscle imbalance, muscle overuse and joint stiffness, whether caused by occupational and postural mechanisms, sport, or tension and stress. It can act as a preventative therapy as well as a remedy for existing symptoms. Regular massage can identify potential injury risk, and will leave you both invigorated and relaxed.

Deep Tissue Massage or Sports Massage is one of our specialities here at Anatomy Manchester.   The two massages are much of the same treatments but referred to in different contexts.  The sports massage is not only for sports people, it is for everyone who wants a deep massage.

Massage is a manipulation of the muscles and soft tissues of the body to reduce tension, stretch ligaments and tendons to keep them flexible, flush out toxins and promote balance in the body and mind. Benefits may include improved circulation, improve the condition of skin and muscle, improve joint mobility, reduced oedema and stimulate digestion.  Massage can also help with uplifting your emotional state and may also help reduce insomnia.

Sports or deep tissue massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue and are especially helpful for chronic and tense areas such as stiff necks, lower back tightness and sore shoulders. Using specific strokes, a Deep Tissue Massage is both powerful and vigorous to get to the deeper layers of muscle tissue.

Sports Massage uses the same techniques and is typically used before, during, and after athletic events. The purpose of the massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance. It does this by draining away toxins, helping to reducing swelling and muscle tension, improving flexibility and reducing the risk of sustaining injuries.

Regular treatments can help break down scar tissue, remove the build-up of toxins, improve mobility and reduce the risk of further injury.
